So why do I think that the priority in restoring health should always be our mind and emotions? I will start with the words of Edward Bach, who in my opinion preached something so often and eagerly overlooked, perhaps for many a missing piece of the health puzzle – probably because it's quite inconvenient.
Disease will never be cured or eradicated by present materialistic methods, for the simple reason that disease in its origin is not material. What we know as disease is an ultimate result produced in the body, the end product of deep and long acting forces, and even if material treatment alone is apparently successful this is nothing more than a temporary relief unless the real cause has been removed.
(…)
No effort directed to the body alone can do more than superficially repair damage, and in this there is no cure, since the cause is still operative and may at any moment again demonstrate its presence in another form. In fact, in many cases apparent recovery is harmful, since it hides from the patient the true cause of his trouble, and in the satisfaction of apparently renewed health the real factor, being unnoticed, may gain in strength.
Edward Bach w „Heal Thyself”
When we speak of "deep and long acting forces" we don't mean something that we are powerless against. The belief in hostile, evil and scary energies that are ruining our lives is well known in Bach Flower Therapy as the negative state of Aspen, and blaming parents, authority, “hidden order of the world” etc. can mostly be attributed to the negative state of Willow. We are not victims of our fate, however hopeless our life may seem. The greater the difficulty, the greater the potential for growth.
Sure, diet has an impact on the psyche. But in my opinion, like Dr. Bach, we can't forget that the psyche has an impact on diet, in fact all physical matters - the desire to exercise, to leave the comfort zone, to do anything that has a positive effect on our body. And this is the question in the title - what came first, diet/sport or a good mindset? In my understanding, improper nutrition and lack of exercise result from problems on the mental and emotional level, which are then deepened by improper nutrition and lack of exercise, creating a vicious circle that is difficult to break.
Moreover, as Bach quoted above writes, even if by some miracle we manage to completely sort out the material elements – the physical body, it doesn't mean that the real cause of the problems will be removed. A rigorous approach to diet, supplementation or sports is related to the rigidity of the rules of the Rock Water Flower state, which we also consider in Bach Therapy as a lack of balance and which also causes health problems. Therefore, psychology – patterns of thinking and emotions – should be a high priority in holistic healing. When a true connection with oneself, body awareness and self-love is developed, healthy diet and physical activity come completely naturally and are not the centre of our lives, but a nice addition that only multiplies the positive effects of the already healed psyche.
This approach is also completely consistent with the theories of quantum physics – it's not the body that creates the thought, but the thought that creates the body. It therefore becomes completely sensible, and even obvious, to optimise the non-physical in order to influence the physical.
As I said in the introduction, working with emotions and the mind is still very uncomfortable these days. We struggle to talk about what we feel, we don't want to look at our patterns, we don't like to see our flaws, we are afraid of our emotions. I especially notice this in the Baby Boomers and Generation X, but many Millennials also have a huge problem with this. But trends are shifting and I also see a growing interest in psychosomatic therapies (i.e. of the "thoughts/emotions create a problem in the body" type), which gives me great hope for the future 🤞 and great motivation to continue expanding and spreading knowledge in the area of working with subtle energy. 🤍
